Cooking
the Books
One way company executives get
themselves into trouble
with the SEC and Shareholders is by “cooking the books.” By the use of
accounting tricks that artificially inflate earnings and reduce
expenses, they misrepresent a company’s financial health. Cookers of
the books almost always get caught: some sooner, some later. In rare
cases, their deceit goes undetected.
In the
political world, Liberalism is ‘cooking the books’ of our nation's
founding. From the university campus to the halls of Congress, one
crafty misrepresentation is laid upon another until many believe
America was founded upon on slavery and white
supremacy.
In the financial world, when
executives get caught cooking the books, they’re usually indicted,
prosecuted and incarcerated. But we’re living in a political world
where Leftists get caught weekly, even daily, in some sort of
subterfuge for which they incur no harm.
Whether
financial or political, the act of cooking the books raises righteous
indignation. When book cookers cook the books with impunity, the
righteous are further enraged.
There’s another
realm—the spiritual—wherein cooking the books is impossible. Those
books are being kept by God himself, and they’re tamper-proof and error
free. John saw this vision:
“And I saw the
dead, small and great, stand before God; and THE BOOKS were opened: and
another BOOK was opened, which is the BOOK OF LIFE: and the dead were
judged out of those things which were written in THE BOOKS, according
to their works” (Revelation 20:12).
There was one
type of spiritual book cooker toward whom Jesus expressed verbal
disdain—the hypocrite. Hypocrites spend much of their lives
artificially inflating the ‘appearance’ of spiritual assets while
hiding spiritual liabilities.
In the final
judgment, ALL the book cookers will be exposed by the One keeping THE
BOOKS. The ONE BOOK that will supersede ALL others is the BOOK OF LIFE,
a book containing the names of ALL who’ve placed their faith in Jesus
for the salvation of their souls.
As members of
Adam’s race, there’s a little bit of book cooker in us ALL. But a true
believer makes no PRETENSE to be in the sight of men something
other than what he KNOWS he is in the sight of God, the keeper
of
THE BOOKS no man can cook!
