Our
Culture
The most significant development in
America the last few decades has been the corruption of our culture.
The corruption of our politics is a reflection of a greater evil. To
what shall we attribute our cultural corruption? The answer to me is
rather simple—the systematic dismantling of TRUTH from the public
square.
Jesus said he was “the Way, the TRUTH
and the Life” (John 14:6). In his prayer for the disciples, he asked
the Father to “sanctify them through thy TRUTH; thy Word is TRUTH”
(John 17:17). In another place, Jesus said “the TRUTH shall make you
free” (John 8:32). There is no mystery as to what the TRUTH, available
in hundreds of millions of KJV 1611 Versions collecting dust across
America’s coffee tables, can bring to individuals and nations who know
and practice it—the presence of Jesus himself, purity of life and true
liberty.
If TRUTH meant anything to our
government and its courts, there would be NO gay marriages, NO
transgenderism, NO unabated lawlessness on our streets and NO grand
theft by government of its citizens with deficit spending and $31
trillion of national
debt for ‘un-paid-for’ stuff. The list is longer. When a nation sends
TRUTH into the background, the result is inevitable—LIES come to the
forefront. And from the WH down through the ranks, America is now
living on LIES.
Is there hope for a reversal of our
TRUTH vacuum? Yes, there is. But it is NOT to be found in either of our
political parties. And it’s certainly NOT to be found in any one
individual. The answer is exactly where the scriptures, God’s TRUTH in
black ink on white paper, say it is—the local CHURCH, the “pillar and
ground of the TRUTH” (1 Timothy 3:15).
In reading the book of Acts, it is
clear the early Church did NOT turn “the world upside down” (Acts 17:6)
by HUDDLING up on Sundays. On the other six days, they were HITTING the
highways and hedges of their cities to share the good news of God’s
salvation for sinners in the Person of his Son, the Lord Jesus.
The apostle Paul had/has a word of
rebuke for churches that fail in this endeavor (e.g., the church at
Corinth), to whom he wrote: “Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for
some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame” (1
Corinthians 15:34). Two clear conclusions: (1) The Church that
practices righteousness is spreading the Good News outside the confines
of its meeting place. (2) The ingrown Church without a passionate
outreach is both SHAMEFUL and SINFUL.
The problem is further exacerbated by
churches with no TRUTH champion in their pulpits. We hear conservative
political pundits talk about “the death of journalism.” As tragic as
that is, the death of the Spirit-filled, Bible expositor is even MORE
tragic. The result is churches that have grown LUKEWARM and churches
that have gone WOKE. Both make our Lord Jesus want to PUKE.
We can talk all we want about the
spiritual and moral corruption of our culture. But until those churches
that name the name of Christ experience of revival of TRUTH that
explodes beyond the confines of their meeting place, America’s culture
will continue to rot without a TRUTH fix!
