The
Word vs Wind
Truth is eternal; so are the words
spoken by Jesus, the embodiment of truth. Three times in the NT, the
writers recorded these words: “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my
words shall not pass away” (Matthew 24:35; Mark 13:31; Luke 21:33). As
the world continues on its downward spiral into a moral
cesspool, it is imperative we believers embrace daily the words of
scripture as worldly winds continue to howl.
The concept of ‘WORD vs WIND' was
illustrated perfectly with Peter’s walk on the water (Matthew
14:25-32). When Jesus came walking on the sea with a boisterous wind in
the fourth watch of the night, the disciples thought they had seen a
ghost. Then came this word from Jesus: “Be of good cheer; it is I; be
not afraid” (14:27). This command by Jesus may have seemed
like a ‘heavy lift’ for these men. But Jesus assured them, as he does
us, that HIS PRESENCE in the midst of OUR STORM is all the reason we
need to REST and REJOICE.
Peter, feeling his spiritual oats,
asked: “Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water,” to
which Jesus replied: “Come” (14:28-29). The ‘if’ clause Peter used was
a first class condition, which means Peter assumed as true it was
indeed Jesus. Based on what he HEARD, he began to walk on water in
confidence. But it wasn’t long into his supernatural sea walk that he
SAW the sea boisterous. What Peter SAW drowned out what he had HEARD.
At one moment, he was WALKING in faith; in the next, he was SINKING in
fear.
America is now enduring the
boisterous winds of godlessness. We as God’s people have to live our
lives in that storm. But you and I have an eternal WORD in our
possession that will outlast and overcome the stormy winds. Do you feel
like walking on the water? Then stay focused on the eternal WORD and
avoid being distracted by the WIND! The WORD is that which breeds
confidence in the midst of chaos!text
